The Photonics21 website can be used without personal information being disclosed. Personal information is only collected if you register as a new Photonics21 member, if you send us an e-mail via the contact form or sign up to be on the newsletter mailing list.

The following statement provides you with a complete overview of how Photonics21 ensures the protection of your data and of the types of data that are collected and the purpose of doing so. Photonics21 takes the protection of your personal data very seriously, especially when you contact us via the internet. Therefore Photonics21 makes every effort not only to present you with a comprehensive website, but also to safeguard your right to the privacy of your personal data and guarantee the protection of your privacy. The legal foundations for this are provided by the Federal Data Protection Law (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz - BDSG) and the Telemedia Act (Telemediengesetz - TMG).

Data processing on this website

Data are collected and exchanged every time a website is visited. Photonics21 automatically collects and stores data that your browser transfers to our server.

This includes:

  • your internet browser type/version
  • the operating system being used
  • the loaded web page
  • the previously visited page (referrer URL)
  • time of the server request

Photonics21 analyzes this data solely for statistical purposes in order to measure the demand for information on the Photonics21 website. Photonics21 is not able to trace this data back to specific individuals. These data are not merged with other data sources. IP-Numbers are only used for data transmission and are not stored after a session has been finished. Data that were logged during access to the Photonics21 website are only transferred to third parties in so far as we are obliged to do so by law or under a court order. Data will also be transferred in the case of attacks on the Photonics21 internet infrastructure that are subject to legal or criminal prosecution. Data will not be transferred for any other reason.


We use what are known as cookies when you visit our web site. Cookies are small text modules that are saved to your computer to allow us to tailor our website to your interests. The information recorded for our use by cookies is anonymous and cannot be traced back to any individual. Data analytics

The Photonics21 website uses Matomo, a web analytics software program which sets cookies to enable us to analyse usage of our website. The information on the use of our website (including your abbreviated IP address) is sent to our server and stored for analytical purposes so that we can improve our website. Your IP address is immediately anonymized so that you remain unidentifiable to us. The information generated by the cookie about your use of this site is not disclosed to any third parties. If you do not wish the data relating to your visit to be stored and analysed, you can refuse permission at any time. In this case a so-called opt-out cookie will be set in your browser which will prevent the collection of any session data by Matomo. However, please note that if you decide to delete the cookies on your computer, this will also delete your opt-out cookie. In that case you will have to set a new one.

Data pertaining to the dispatch of newsletters

When you sign up to be on a mailing list for the Photonics21 newsletter, your e-mail address and is stored on our server. We use this information solely for the purpose of dispatching newsletters. Data sets are used to analyze system performance for statistical purposes. We neither pass on this data to third parties nor use it for any other purposes of our own. Our registration system, which includes a confirmation message containing a web link to finalize registration (double-opt-in), ensures that you have explicitly requested the newsletter.

Data pertaining to the registration as a new Photonics21 member

When you sign up to become a new Photonics21 member, your name, first name, e-mail address, type of affiliation, name of affiliation, your affiliation's address and your choice to sign in for one or two Photonics21 work groups is stored on our server. We use this information solely for being able to contact the Photonics21 membership. We neither pass on this data to third parties nor use it for any other purposes of our own. Our registration system, which includes a confirmation message containing a web link to finalize registration (double-opt-in), ensures that you have explicitly requested to become a new Photonics21 member.

Order transactions and e-mails to Photonics21

When you send us an e-mail, its contents and your e-mail address will be used solely for the purpose of corresponding with you. If you provide us with personalized data we will use these only for the purpose of processing your request. We will not sell, loan or in any other way pass on your personalized data to third parties. In the case of order transactions, e.g. if you ask for Photonics21 brochures, any personal data submitted will be passed on to third parties solely for the purpose of handling the order (e.g. to a mail order company or our warehouse for the sending of Photonics21 materials).

Social media networks

The Photonics21 website uses "Recommend-buttons" of social networks such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Linkedin. If you click on the "Recommend-button" you will be directed to the website of the corresponding social network and will be asked to sign in to your personal account. As soon as you have signed in it might be the case that your personal data will be put into relation with the Photonics21 website and that the respective social network will process your data or might use them for advertising purposes. With your active registration to one of the above mentioned social media networks the privacy policy rules of the respective social media network will be valid.
